What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which blood clots occur in the deep veins. These veins are located deep inside the body and not on the surface of the skin. Deep vein thrombosis can develop in any part of the body. However, in most cases, it is seen that deep vein thrombosis occurs in the legs or the pelvic region. This happens because the lower body experiences more pressure than the upper part of the body. Deep vein thrombosis is a rather serious condition and if left untreated, can give rise to hazardous complications.

    Treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis

    Diagnosis

The doctor asks about the symptoms and carries out a thorough physical exam to look for areas of swelling, discolored skin, and soreness. If the doctor suspects the presence of an underlying blot clot, they ask for certain tests.

Deep vein thrombosis is usually diagnosed through a Doppler’s ultrasound. In Doppler’s ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are used to check the flow of blood through the veins. The ultrasound detects the blood flow and an impaired blood flow indicates the presence of blood clots in the vein.

The doctor may conduct a series of ultrasounds to check if the blood clot is growing or to look for new blood clots that may have formed.

    Surgery

The doctor assesses the severity of the deep vein thrombosis and then suggests suitable treatment. In most cases, deep vein thrombosis is diagnosed in mild stages only. For treating such cases, the laser-based procedure is used.

Laser treatment for deep vein thrombosis uses a high-intensity laser beam for treating the blood clots in the veins. The procedure is minimally invasive and does not involve any cuts or incisions. The risk of postoperative complications is nil and the procedure is 100 percent safe.

What are the best home remedies for deep vein thrombosis?

    1. Vitamin E- Vitamin E acts as a blood thinner and thus prevents the coagulation of blood. Thinner blood is less prone to clotting. Therefore, Vitamin E plays a crucial role in preventing and improving deep vein thrombosis.
    2. Ginger- Ginger is an excellent home remedy for deep vein thrombosis. The salicylate present in ginger makes the blood thinner so that it can flow smoothly. Ginger also breaks down fibrins that contribute to the development of deep vein thrombosis. Also, ginger keeps a check on cholesterol levels and prevents plaque from building in the veins, thereby ensuring proper blood circulation.
    3. Turmeric- Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin which has anti-inflammatory, blood-thinning, and anti-coagulant properties. Curcumin also improves the functioning of the inner lining of the blood vessels, and thus regulates blood pressure and prevents blood clotting.
    4. Garlic cloves- Garlic cloves and garlic powder is another great remedy for deep vein thrombosis. Garlic has anti-thrombotic properties, which means that it prevents the clotting of blood. In addition to this, garlic improves blood circulation and provides relief from the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis.
    5. Cayenne pepper- Cayenne peppers have high salicylate contents. Therefore, cayenne peppers regulate the flow of blood and make the blood thinner, thereby preventing it from clotting. Also, cayenne peppers monitor cholesterol levels and blood pressure and thus maintain proper blood circulation throughout the body.
    6. Omega-3 fatty acid- Omega-3 fatty acids play a major role in maintaining vein health and repairing vein tissues. In addition to this, Omega-3 fatty acids keep the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in check. Therefore, Omega-3 fatty acids ensure the proper flow of blood and thus prevent it from coagulating.

What to eat with deep vein thrombosis?

The following foods highly benefit the condition of deep vein thrombosis.
    • Whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, maize, etc
    • Have more fruits and vegetables

Can compression stocking provide relief in deep vein thrombosis?

Compression stockings can reduce the swelling of the leg caused by a blood clot. These stockings are worn below the knee or just above the foot. The compression stockings create pressure on the leg and prevent blood from pooling or getting clotted. Compression stocking can be of different types and made up of different materials. There are stockings that only protect your legs. But, compression stockings are designed to tightly fit around the legs, ankles and thighs, and exert pressure that allows blood to flow freely from the legs to the heart. Compression stockings are recommended in deep vein thrombosis not just to reduce the swelling and pain in the legs but also to improve the blood flow.

How to prevent a deep vein thrombosis?

Once you are diagnosed with a DVT, you can do the following the risks of any further potential clots:
    • Take medications as per the doctor’s advice.
    • If you have a sitting job, keep massaging your legs at regular intervals.
    • Keep walking inside the room, even if you want to take small steps.
    • Wear compression stockings.
    • Keep your blood pressure under control.
