What is a hip replacement?

Hip replacement is the surgical procedure of replacing a hip joint with a prosthetic implant. There are two types of hip replacement - Hemi Replacement or Total Replacement. As the name suggests, in a hemi replacement, the surgeon replaces half of the hip joint. But, in a total hip replacement, the surgeon replaces the entire hip joint. Hip replacement is also known as hip arthroplasty and can be considered as a treatment option for your hip pain.

    Diagnosis

    During diagnosis, the orthopedic surgeon will evaluate the condition before deciding on the treatment. To evaluate the condition, the surgeon may recommend the following tests and ask about your general health condition.

    • Physical examination – The doctor will assess the mobility, strength and alignment of the hip.
    • Medical history – The orthopedic doctor will gather information about your general health.
    • Imaging tests – Imaging tests like CT scan and MRI will help to evaluate the condition of the bone and tissues of the hip.
    • X-rays – The x-ray images will help in determining the extent of the deformity and damage in the hip.

    Surgery

    Hip replacement surgery is usually performed under anesthesia. The surgery could be done either in the conventional manner or the minimally invasive way. In the standard conventional technique, 8-10 inches long incisions are made and in minimally invasive technique the incisions are not more than 2-4 inches long.

    During hip replacement, the surgeon will make an incision in the front or side of the hip or through the tissue layers of the hip. The surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage through the incisions and leaves the healthy bone. The surgeon will then remove the ball portion of the joint by cutting the thighbone.

    After removing the damaged parts, the surgeon attaches a replacement socket to the hipbone. The surgeon inserts the new ball part of the thigh bone into the socket part. The surgeon reattaches the muscles and closes the incisions. The surgery usually completes within 60-90 minutes.
