What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is the surgical procedure to reduce the size of the female labia. The surgery can be performed on both inner and outer vaginal lips. This surgery repairs damage to the labia caused by lifestyle, disease, or childbirth. The enlarged labia can cause discomfort during intercourse, sports activities and while wearing tight clothes or undergarments. This surgery can be performed along with other female genital cosmetic or surgical procedures like vaginoplasty, or vaginal rejuvenation.

Diagnosis

The gynaecologist physically examines the female to check the condition and make sure she is fit for the surgery.

Surgery

The procedure shortens or reshapes the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or a laser, and the loose edge is stitched up with dissolvable stitches. The whole procedure takes about one to two hours and is carried out under the influence of either general anesthesia or local anesthesia.

Frequently   Asked Questions

A labia can enlarge due to aging or vaginal childbirth causing extreme irritation down there. A woman may have enlarged labia due to genetic reasons.

Labiaplasty is a female genital procedure. It is performed by doctors who specialize in the field of cosmetic gynaecology.

Labiaplasty surgery is a quick procedure that takes around 45 minutes to complete. Usually, you will return to your normal routine within 2-4 days post-surgery. However, the female should refrain from heavy physical activity, workouts or sexual intercourse for 4-5 days after the surgery.

There is no definite answer to this question. Labiaplasty is a highly individualistic procedure which means the doctor performs it on the patient keeping their needs and expectations in mind. As each patient has a different set of needs and expectations, the procedure is also unique for every individual. Therefore, the cost of the procedure varies for every patient.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, labiaplasty is a surgical procedure which aims to minimize the size of the inner tissue of the vulva (also known as labia minora) so that it remains smaller than the outer tissue of the vulva, otherwise known as labia majora.

Not at all. The reason being that the patient is sedated with anesthesia- local or general- depending on their choice throughout the whole treatment. Therefore, one cannot feel any pain nor any discomfort during the surgery.

An experienced cosmetic gynaecologist ensures that the procedure doesn’t leave behind any visible scars. A highly-qualified doctor ensures that incisions are made in the natural folds of the vulva, making it impossible for anyone to make out a labiaplasty is performed.

No. Most of the health insurance plans in India don’t cover cosmetic genital procedures such as labiaplasty. This surgical procedure is not considered as a medical emergency and hence, most of the medical insurers don’t include this procedure under this plan.

What are the types of Labiaplasty?

With the evolution of technology in the medical field, some advancements have also been made with labiaplasty technique. Here are the two most common techniques to perform a labiaplasty-

  • Trim technique- Original way of the procedure, this technique involves removing the excess tissue of labia minora so that it becomes proportional to the labia majora.
  • Wedge technique- With this technique, the doctor removes the thickest part of the labia minora leaving the submucosa layer intact.

Preparing for Labiaplasty

Proper preparation allows that the whole procedure is completed without any complications. Hence, it is imperative that the patient follows the post-operative routine with the similar diligence that they do after the procedure. Here are some basics to keep in mind-

  • Speak to your doctor about the daily medications that you take pertaining to any underlying condition
  • Do not engage in any sexual activity for a month before the procedure.
  • Avoid taking any blood thinners and medications that can increase the risk of excessive bleeding for at least two weeks.
  • Prior to eight hours of the surgery, do not eat nor drink anything. It is essential that you keep the stomach empty so that there are no adverse effects of the anesthesia.
  • Take enough rest before the surgery so that the body is fully prepared for the procedure. Get at least 9 hours of sleep.

What questions should one ask to a doctor prior to Labiaplasty?

It is quite normal for a patient who is undergoing a labiaplasty to have several queries prior to the procedure. Here is a list of questions to refer to during the visit to the gynaecologist-

  • Will my sensitivity around the vulvar area, especially in the vagina or clitoris reduce after the surgery?
  • Will I be able to have proper orgasm after the procedure?
  • Will the procedure affect any future pregnancy or normal childbirth?
  • Can I insert tampons after the procedure?
  • Can I have a look at your credentials and also the number of procedures that you have performed successfully?

What are the Possible Side effects That Can Occur After Labiaplasty

It is no surprise that after a surgical procedure, there ought to be some mild side-effects and complications. Same with labiaplasty. As there are some cuts (even though very small in size), it takes some time for the body to heal itself. But there is no major complication to be worried about. Some of the side effects that one is likely to feel after the procedure include-

  • Mild bleeding
  • Infection
  • Hematoma
  • Numbness that is temporary
  • Chronic dryness
  • Decreased sensitivity around the vulva
  • Mild discomfort during sexual intercourse in the initial days of the recovery

There is nothing to be worried about the above side effects and risks as these are easily manageable with the post-operative instructions prescribed by the doctor.

How to recover after Labiaplasty?

As discussed earlier, recovery is an essential part of the entire treatment. The recovery period actually determines the effectiveness of the surgery. Here are of couple of tips that can help the patient on their way to the recovery-

  • Place ice packs around the vulva to relieve minor pain and swelling.
  • On the second day itself, get on with mild walking inside your house as well as go for a walk so that there is blood circulation.
  • For the first 24 hours the patient should completely rest.
  • Pay extra attention about the hygiene in the vaginal area till the healing process has completed fully.
  • Use sprays only prescribed by the doctors while cleaning the area.
  • Wear only loose-fitting cotton fabric clothes to ensure that the vaginal area is breathable ensuring there is no collection of any germs.
  • Resume sexual activities only after getting confirmation from the doctor that it is completely safe. Let pain guide you through the process.
